A Mechanic's Checklist: Picking Your Next Bafang Motor, Servo Drive, or Timing Belt (Without the Regret)

Check these:

  • Mounting pattern (NEMA vs. metric, bolt hole distance)
  • Shaft diameter and keyway
  • Overall length—can it fit in the enclosure?
  • For timing belt replacement, check the pulley bore size and keyway first. You'd be surprised how often a standard belt is ordered but the pulley is a special size.

Checklist item: Confirm all physical dimensions against the old part or the mounting drawing. Don't just trust the model number.

Step 3: Check the Controller and Wiring Diagram (The Step Most People Skip)

This is the one that cost me the most. In July 2022, I ordered 5 Bafang M620 motors without double-checking the controller compatibility with the existing battery packs. Turns out, the BMS protocol was different. We had to buy new controllers—$1,200 extra, and a 2-week delay.

  • For a stepper motor, does the driver need microstepping for your application?

Checklist item: Ensure the controller spec sheet matches your control voltage, communication protocol, and battery voltage. If you're unsure, get the manufacturer's wiring diagram.

Step 4: Consider the 'Hidden' Costs: Sealing, Gears, and Bearings

A motor is not just a motor. It needs supporting parts. I once saved $30 by not buying a sealing gasket for a gearbox on a Bafang hub motor (the internal planetary gear type). The oil leaked out, the gears wore down, and I spent $250 on a replacement unit.

Look at what's not included:

  • Ball bearing quality—are they sealed? Are they rated for your environment (dust, water)?
  • Gear type—plastic vs. metal. On a high-torque Bafang mid-drive motor kit, metal gears are standard, but on some hub motors, they're nylon.
  • For a timing belt replacement, check if you need a new tensioner or idler pulley. The old belt might have worn those out.

Step 5: Don't Forget the Lead Time (A Lesson in Pressure)

Had 4 hours to decide on a replacement linear actuator for a production line shutdown. Normally I'd get 3 quotes and check stock. But there was no time. I went with the one vendor that promised 2-day shipping. It arrived in 5 days. The line down cost was $1,800.

In hindsight, I should have called around for stock availability first. But with the production manager waiting, I made the call based on reputation, not logistics.

Checklist item: Verify actual stock and shipping time with the vendor. Not just what their website says. A call takes 5 minutes and can save you from choosing between 'fast but wrong' and 'right but slow.'

Things I Wish I'd Known Earlier

Here are some common last-minute foul-ups to watch for:

  • Connector types: On a bafang-motor, the internal wiring for the hub motor vs. the mid-drive might look the same but have different pinouts. Don't trust the color of the wires—check the wiring diagram.
  • VFD sizing: When figuring out how vfd control motor speed, the VFD needs to be rated for the motor's full-load amps (FLA), not just the horsepower. An undersized VFD can overheat in 10 minutes.
